With its massive pyramids, lush Nile riverbanks, and sweeping deserts, Egypt is a dream destination for photographers and videographers. If you are packing your gear right now, you are probably wondering what the official rules are. Let's get straight to the point, especially regarding the most frequently asked question: drones.
The Drone Ban (Do Not Pack It)
The short answer is absolutely NO. You cannot bring a drone into Egypt.
Under strict Egyptian aviation and national security laws, flying, possessing, or importing a drone without explicit, highly restricted prior authorization from the Ministry of Defense is a serious criminal offense.
If you pack a drone in your checked or carry-on luggage, it will be detected by the X-ray scanners at Cairo International Airport upon your arrival. It will be immediately confiscated by customs officials. While they typically hold it at the airport for you to retrieve when you leave the country, the retrieval process is notoriously bureaucratic and often results in missed flights or permanently lost equipment. Save yourself the stress and leave the DJI at home.
Good News for Regular Photography (DSLRs and Phones)
While the drone laws are strict, the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has recently drastically relaxed the rules for regular photography to encourage tourism.
-
Free Personal Photography: You are now allowed to take photos and videos for personal use using cell phones, standard DSLRs, and mirrorless cameras completely for free at almost all archaeological sites and museums.
-
Inside the Tombs: You can even take photos inside the stunning tombs of the Valley of the Kings, provided you turn your flash OFF to protect the ancient pigments.
-
Tripods and Professional Gear: If you bring large tripods, external lighting rigs, or heavy professional cinematic gear, you will still need to purchase a commercial photography permit at the ticket window.
